Technique: This piece is a masterclass in graphic contrast and pattern work. Captain used vibrant watercolors to create the ethereal, cosmic background, allowing the colors to bleed together like a nebula. He then used bold, opaque black and white paint to create the striking patterns on the birds, demonstrating a sophisticated eye for repetition and rhythm. The use of bright red gouache for the combs and yellow for the beaks provides the perfect pop of primary color, while the white stippling in the sky adds a final layer of sparkling detail.
