Titled “The Great Rainbow Sea Serpent,” this epic artwork by 5-year-old Captain is a dive into a magical underwater realm. He was inspired by legendary sea creatures that guard the ocean’s secrets. The magnificent rainbow-scaled dragon is the guardian of the deep, swimming under a unique celestial sky. Here, a brilliant yellow sun, puffy blue-and-purple clouds, and sparkling stars co-exist over a churning, deep blue sea filled with other colorful fish and coral. This piece beautifully captures a world without boundaries.
Technique: This is Captain’s most accomplished mixed-media masterwork. He began by creating a vibrant, segmented texture for the serpent and stars using high-pressure crayons, achieving deep saturation. He then masterfully applied a complex watercolor wash for the vast sky and sea, layered over the crayon to create a “crayon resist” texture and atmospheric depth. White splatter-paint dots are strategically added to represent stars in the sky and sea spray. The overall composition shows advanced early skills in balancing multiple focal points and atmospheric perspective.
