In “The Girl by the Blue River,” created by Captain at age 5, we are invited to a quiet day in the countryside. A young girl in a pink dress stands by a vibrant blue river, her fishing line cast into the water where fish and even a turtle swim by. Behind her, a traditional wooden house sits on stilts over the water, nestled against rolling green hills and a sturdy wooden fence. It’s a nostalgic and warm depiction of a simple life connected to nature.
Technique: This piece showcases Captain’s growing skill in perspective and landscape layering. He used watercolors to create the soft, blending greens of the hills and the deep blue of the river. A standout feature is the use of wax resist (white crayon) to create the rippling white waves on the water before painting over it with blue. The details of the house and characters are done in bold marker, and he used a heavy stippling technique with markers for the grass to add a sense of physical texture and depth.
