In “The Enchanted Night-and-Day Forest,” created by Captain at age 5, we enter a world where time stands still. This “split-sky” scene tells a story of the forest waking up and falling asleep all at once. Look closely to find a variety of forest friends, from a playful raccoon on a rock to a clever fish jumping in the stream and a tiny deer peeking through the trees.
Technique: This artwork highlights Captain’s mastery of atmospheric watercolor blending. He used a “wet-on-wet” technique to create the swirling, misty textures of the night sky and the glowing light around the sun. He then layered bold marker illustrations to give the trees and animals their distinct shapes. A unique feature of this piece is the stippling and dot work used to create the stars and the texture of the forest floor, adding a sense of sparkling detail that draws the viewer’s eye across the entire landscape.
