Technique: This artwork is a brilliant example of high-contrast mixed media. Captain used a deep indigo watercolor wash for the night sky, providing a dramatic backdrop for the fluorescent oil pastels and markers used for the fireworks. The buildings are rendered with bold black outlines and detailed architectural features like bricks and window panes. A standout detail is the splatter and dot technique used to represent the falling embers and “sparkle” of the fireworks, giving the entire sky a sense of shimmering movement and depth.
