In “The Giant Blue Crab of the Golden Beach,” 5-year-old Captain brings a legendary sea creature to life. Standing prominently on a sand-colored shore dotted with red sea pebbles and a friendly starfish, this massive blue crab is the king of the coast. Behind him, the deep blue sea meets rolling green hills under a bright sun and pink-tinted clouds. It’s a wonderful reimagining of a day at the beach, seen through the eyes of a child who finds magic in nature’s smallest creatures.
Technique: Captain uses a striking color-blocking technique for the crab’s body, using a deep blue wash that makes the character “pop” off the page. The background is a beautiful display of bleeding watercolor techniques, where the blue of the ocean and the green of the hills softly merge. He used bold ink outlines to give the crab its sharp claws and expressive eyes, and finished the piece with detailed stippling (red dots) to create the texture of a pebbly, sun-warmed beach.
